CALENDAR OF EVENTS - AUGUST 2010

4th – 8th August - 5th SANUR VILLAGE FESTIVAL
Following the four consecutive successful celebrations, this year’s Sanur Village Festival is taking place at Segara Ayu Beach and Inna Grand Bali Beach Sanur. “Saha Nuhur” is this year’s theme of the festival that literally means “the passion to visit a certain place”, which later became the name of “Sanur”. 8th – 14th – 21st August – KU DE TA High Season
This August will see many parties, events and special guests through the high season all over Bali. Notably is the 10th Anniversary of the world renown venue KU DE TA which will be held on the 14th of this month with guest appearances notably Brand New Heavies. 9th August – DARK MOON - Tilem Sasih Karo

The Balinese adhering to the Hindu Dharma religion will celebrate ‘Tilem’ in temple ceremonies, which are mostly held in every major temple and family shrines around the island of Bali. On this day Hindus make offerings to the Gods, placed on the ground at the entrance of each housing compound. The aim is to beg God’s grace; so that God illuminates one’s dark thoughts.

10th August - PERMULAAN BULAN PUASA

Today marks the beginning of Ramadan, which is the name of the one-month fasting period when Muslims fast for a period of almost 12 hours (from sunrise to sunset). Only the sick are exempted from fasting during this month. Muslims are expected to avoid lying, breaking promises or cheating during the month of Ramadan. The basic aim behind the fasting during Ramadan is to remind the Muslims of self-discipline and reconciling to Allah, the Holy one.

17th August - INDEPENDENCE DAY

This is a national public holiday; therefore banks and government buildings will be closed, as will be a large amount of commerce. After the flag hoisting at the National Palace, and a display of marching from military to children to adults; neighborhoods prepare for fun and games for the kids. Krupuk (shrimp crisps) eating contests, games, races, bike decorating and lots of fun to fill the day. The women are busy in cooking contests to see who can make the biggest krupuk or the most delicious nasi tumpeng. You will see the red and white Indonesian flag everywhere, from cars to houses to businesses.

24th August – FULL MOON - Purnama Sasih Katiga

The full moon falls on this day and ceremonies are held throughout the Hindu temples all across Bali. The Balinese that adhere to the Hindu Dharma religion will take offerings of food, fruit and flowers to the temple to be blesses by the priest. It is the essence of theses offerings that will be enjoyed by the deities. The Balinese themselves are then blessed by performing various rituals using holy water, incense smoke, petals and rice grains.

CALENDAR OF EVENTS - JULY 2010

1st - 10th July – 32nd Bali Arts FestivalThe Bali Arts Festival is a full month of daily performances, having begun on June 12th of handicraft exhibitions and other related cultural and commercial activities during which literally the whole of Bali comes to the capital city to present its offerings of dance, music and beauty. The Bali Arts Festival is the Denpasar cultural event of the year. The festival is thus a unique opportunity to see local village culture both live and at first hand. Tourists are warmly welcomed. 2nd – 4th July – Gempita Gianyar III
This is the third of the successful event celebrating art, culture and fashion held in 2007 & 2008 to be held in Ubud, with consideration to Ubud being nominated as ‘The Best City in Asia’ by Conde Nast in the US.

10th July – Public Holiday – Ascension of the Prophet
This is a national public holiday; therefore banks and government buildings will be closed, as may be some commerce, which celebrates the ascension of the Prophet Muhammad. This event is celebrated each year via a festival for families, the Lailat al Miraj, one of the most important events in the Islamic calendar. Muslims bring their children to mosques where the children are told the parable, pray with the adults, and then afterward food and treats are served.

The annual Kuta Karnival may be held this September, but all the aspiring musicians and bands out there must get their demo cd’s in by today to be chosen as the theme tune and media exposure in the ‘Heal the World’ themed competition. 31st July – Tumpek Kandang – Balinese Blessing Ceremony
This Balinese Hindu ceremony is held every 210 days to honour and bless livestock and domesticated animals. The name Tumpek Kandang is derived from two words, ‘Tumpek’, which means Saturday and ‘Kandang’ being the Balinese word for cage. This special day honours nature and in particular cows will be washed in the rivers and adorned, pigs will have their bellies washed & wrapped in cloth, as well as being given specially chosen food. The Balinese believe this will bring their livestock and themselves more prosperity. Prayers will be held at the temples across the island..

CALENDAR OF EVENTS - MAY 2010

17th May – Blas Rivera at Ku De Ta
Blas Rivera, Argentinean composer and saxophonist of tango and world music renown, is playing live at this amazing beachfront venue from 8pm onwards. Dinner reservations will be an absolute must for this one off event.

(11th) 12th (13th) May – Hari Raya Galungan
Galungan is a Balinese holiday that occurs every 210 days and lasts for 10 days. Kuningan is the last day of the holiday (see below). Galungan means ‘When the Dharma is winning’ – Dharma being good over evil. During this holiday the Balinese Gods visit the earth and leave on Kuningan. During the Galungan period the deified ancestors of the family descend to their former homes to be entertained by those on earth.

13th May - Ascension Day
As well as being the Balinese Hindu Holiday of Galungan today is also a religious national holiday; therefore banks and government buildings will be closed, as may be some commerce.

22nd May – Hari Raya Kuningan

This day is always celebrated 10 days after Galungan and marks the end of the festivities, sending deified ancestors back to the heavens. There will be many colourful temple ceremonies, with the Balinese suitably attired coming to and fro, according plenty of photo opportunities. Please be patient when on the roads.

27th May – Full Moon Sasih Sadha

28th May – Waisak Day

Waisak Day is celebrated throughout the world to commemorate and honor the birthday of Lord Buddha, the Enlightened One. It is the most auspicious day in the Buddhist calendar, marking the birth, enlightenment and death of Buddha and is celebrated as a national holiday throughout Indonesia. Therefore all banks and government offices will be closed on this day, as may some shops and other forms of commerce.
