CALENDAR OF EVENTS – JUNE 2014

Pemendakan – June 1
Translating to “welcoming,” Pemendakan is a welcoming procession for the deities. Festivities are held starting from the Sakenan temple to Denpasar, to Pura Sakenan in Serangan Island, south of Denpasar, in the afternoon. There are also temple anniversary celebrations held on the day at: Pura Datem Pauman Bhujangga in Penatih village, east of Denpasar; Pura Alas Arum in Batur village, district of Kintamani, Bangli regency; Pura Batuaji, Ubung Tengah village, west of Denpasar; Pura Dalem Buleleng, downtown of Singaraja; and Pura Dalem Jagaraga village, district of Sawan, Buleleng regency. No matter where you go to get a glimpse of the ceremonies taking place, you can be sure to be impressed with the usual displays of colorful offerings, ceremonial clothes, Balinese prayer services, and entrancing gamelan music Bali is famed for.

June 8 – Ngerebong
One of the most well-known religious ceremonies in the world – worshippers gather at the royal temple in the Kesiman village, east of Denpasar, for a day-long communion between the Hindu gods, nature, and humankind. Starting with rituals to summon Hindu spirits back to earth, the festivities escalate until they work themselves into a mass trance. Wearing elaborate costumes to invoke the gods and escape their bodies, groups of the temple adherents in trance stab
themselves with the “keris” dagger in their necks and chests, without drawing even a drop of blood. In the day a cockfight is held for “Tabuh Rah” ritual (blood shedding) to please underworld spirits during the ceremony. The ceremony is more than 100 years old, and takes place every 210 days – the length of a traditional Balinese year.

June 11 – July 9 – Bali Arts Festival
Balinese culture is well-known worldwide for its rich arts & crafts traditions – and for a whole month, the arts scene comes alive with special showcases at the Bali Arts Festival – or as known traditionally, Pesta Kesenian Bali. Centered at the Bali Arts Center in Denpasar, visitors can view daily performance of dance and music along countless exhibitions featuring both contemporary and traditional shows of local creativity and talent. A real grassroots affair, the festival is organized with villages selecting performers to send to regional selection committees – the chosen carrying on to dazzle festival attendees with their special shows of the beauty of Balinese cultural arts.

June 12-13 – Fifa World Cup Brazil
The heat is getting intense around the globe as the biggest sports event of the year draws near. Known as soccer to some, and football to others around the world – regardless of what you call it, few team sports have been able to arouse the masses into such massive displays of support and competitive spirit than the focus of the World Cup, this year taking place in Brazil. It’s a showdown of the world’s best players that’s bound to draw groups of cheering fans everywhere – and you can be sure that there are plenty of venues around the island here catering to those supporting their favorite teams. Whether in Kuta, Seminyak, Sanur, or elsewhere – be on the lookout for the buzz of “oohs” and “aahs” coming from TV-lined bars and restaurants along the main tourist strips, and head on in for a Bintang while watching another special round of sports history in action.

June 21 – Summer/Winter Solstice
It’s that day when one season moves into another… For many, known as Summer Solstice – the 21st welcomes the warm summer months in the northern hemisphere; meanwhile, the day welcomes the colder months of the year, bringing in winter in the south. While Bali may technically be in the southern hemisphere, fear not the Winter Solstice – for we’re thankfully close enough to the equator to escape the cold and maintain our sun & warmth year-round.

June 27 – Younger Next Year Asia Summit
Those into cultivating their health may share in some special excitement, as some of the greats of the fitness and wellness world gather at the Pan Pacific Nirwana Bali for he Younger Next Year Asia Summit. Featuring Chris Crowley, author of the New York Best-Seller “Younger Next Year,” global celebrity fitness coach and host of The Biggest Loser – most popular TV show in Australia – Shannan Ponton, and a host of other wellness heavyweights – attendees of the summit can hear world-class speakers talking on subjects ranging from future-proofing your brain to the latest in stem cell therapy alongside exhibition booths featuring informative and interesting health products and services for you to discover. A must-attend for anyone taking a keen interest in the well-being of both themselves and others.

GALUNGAN AND KUNINGAN DAY

GALUNGAN AND KUNINGAN DAY
May 21, 2014 – May 31, 2014
Every 210 days the whole island of Bali sprouts flimsy bamboo poles, known as “penjor,” an unmistakable sign that Galungan fever is just about to kick in. Adorned with fruit, flowers and coconut leaves, these tall poles are found on every byway and highway and outside virtually every Balinese home, fluttering aimlessly in the breeze.

Galungan is a unique 10 day celebration commemorating good over evil in typically melodramatic style. Balinese mythology is colorful to say the least and the story behind Galungan takes it to a whole new level. Briefly, it involves a shape-shifting evil giant, rivers of blood and a year-long battle royal between the Gods. During Galungan the Godly spirits return to earth and expect to be welcomed and entertained with important Balinese rituals and extravagant feasts.

From a visitor’s point of view, Galungan is second only for sheer spectacle to the Nyepi “Day of Silence”. Kuningan is the final day of the festival which brings proceedings to a close. It is all a much regimented occasion where every member of the household has specific tasks to perform and dressed in their “Sunday best” finery. The preceding days are all full of feverish activity – cooking, cleaning and making offerings. You’ll see the roads filled with convoys of scooters ferrying neatly dressed worshippers to and from temples carrying huge baskets of fruit, flowers or even live chickens.

The day before Galungan, men of the village head out at dawn in search of an unsuspecting pig which is to become the temple sacrifice. The meat is used to make traditional spicy “lawar” dishes containing satay, jackfruit, dozens of herbs and spices and always enough to feed a small army.

Only if you go native staying in a rural village or in a small family home stay do you see all the complicated preparations and hectic activity taking place behind the scene, although even in busy resorts such as Kuta, it’s virtually impossible to escape Kuningan fever.

There are road blocks erected outside main temples as waves of devotees flood the area, bringing even more maddening traffic chaos than usual. Many restaurants and shops close for a few days but this is not on the scale of Nyepi (when Bali becomes a ghost town). There is still no shortage of places to get a cold beer or two and a bite to eat.

On Galungan day itself (always the Wednesday) it’s a time for families; your favorite bartender or the girl who cleans your hotel room each morning will have headed off home to the ancestral village at dawn to spend time with the folks. After a full day of prayers, a few petty family quarrels and non stop eating, it’s back to relative normality with perhaps a family stroll into the paddy fields for a picnic. Villages throughout the island celebrate the post-Galungan period in their own peculiar way.

The streets of Ubud are flooded with schoolchildren performing “Barong” dances with great enthusiasm while further east in Klungkung, a number of villages indulge in frenzied “Jempana” war games complete with long bamboo sticks to the sound of relentless drumming. There is also the bizarre ritual of a village elder seemingly “stabbing” himself with a ceremonial dagger while in a trance-like state. Curious onlookers are always welcome at these occasions and in small off-the-beaten-path villages you are likely to become the center of attention, especially with the throng of giggling children.

8th March – Balinese Blessing Ceremony – Hari Raya Saraswati
This day is devoted to God’s Manifestation as Dewi Saraswati, the beautiful Goddess of Knowledge, Art and Literature. She rules the intellectual and creative realm, and is the patron goddess of libraries and schools. Balinese Hindus believe that knowledge is an essential medium to achieve the goal of life as a human being, and so honour her. On this day no one is allowed to read or write, and offerings are made to the lontar (palm-leaf manuscripts), books, and shrines.

12th March – Balinese Blessing Ceremony – Hari Raya Pagerwasi
The name literally means ‘iron fence’, on which day ceremonies and prayers are held for strong mental and spiritual defense in welcoming the Galungan holiday. It is always held a few days after Hari Raya Saraswati to empower the learning and wisdom bestowed. Bali will be very colourful and people will be coming to and from the temples for most of the day so please refrain from honking on the roads.

15th March – Full Moon – Hari Purnama Sasih Kesanga
The full moon (which has particular importance to the Balinese Hindus) falls on this day and ceremonies are held throughout the Hindu temples all across Bali. The Balinese that adhere to the Hindu Dharma religion will take offerings of food, fruit and flowers to the temple to be blesses by the priest. The Balinese themselves are then blessed by performing various rituals using holy water, incense smoke, petals and rice grains.

19th – 23rd March – The 7th Annual BaliSpirit Festival
Be a part of something that will change our world. The BaliSpirit Festival is a spiritually charged event that celebrates yoga, dance and music and the synergy of global cultural collaboration through the arts. The Seventh Festival will take place in Ubud from March 19th 2014. Early Bird Tickets are available now. Held over 5 transformational and fun-filled days, this annual celebration brings to Bali a wealth of talented and respected creative masters from around the world, merging the indigenous and rich cultures of Indonesia in the spirit of learning, collaboration and the celebration of creative and spiritual diversity. www.balispiritfestival.com

22nd March – Balinese Blessing Ceremony – Tumpek Landep
This day is devoted to the Agama Hindu God “Sanghyang Pasupati” when blessing ceremonies are conducted over heirlooms, sacred weapons and all instruments and tools made of metal (even cars & motorbikes), to bestow good energy for both day to day functioning as well as believed magical powers. This ceremony is held throughout Bali, especially at smiths, garages and workshops.

28th March – Balinese Blessing Ceremony – Hari Raya Melasti
Melasti Ceremony is always held three days before Nyepi and is aimed at cleansing all of nature in the ocean, or at other water sources if need be. There may be traffic delays or jams, with some streets being closed off, as large groups of Balinese make their way to the beaches by foot from their respective temples. Please be patient and do not honk vehicle horns.

31st March – Hari-Raya Nyepi – Balinese New Year 1936
Nyepi is the Balinese New Year’s Day according to the lunar calendar and is honored through a ‘Day of Silence’ of obligatory fasting, inactivity, prayer, and quiet throughout the island lasting for 24 hours. Purification offerings are made in every village on the day before to appease evil spirits, and a lively parade of ‘Ogoh-Ogohs’ (demon effigies) are carried throughout village streets to the sound of loud banging and lit torches to chase off the evil spirits. The noise can carry on throughout the night until morning, when silence reigns in the hope that if the spirits return to Bali, they will find it uninhabited. Restrictions are; no lighting fires, or lights after dark, no working, entertainment or pleasure, little noise from TVs and radios, and few signs of activity. No one is to go onto the streets (except the Pecelang), and the airport will also be closed. More info at www.balitourismboard.org
