CALENDAR OF EVENTS - MARCH 2013
9TH MARCH - HARI RAYA MELASTI
Melasti Ceremony is always held three days before Nyepi and is aimed at cleansing all of nature in the ocean, or at other water sources if need be. Expect traffic delays.
11TH MARCH - HARI TAWAR AGUNG KESANGA
This is the day before Nyepi when at dusk the Ogoh-Ogoh parade is held throughout the villages to chase demons away from human life.
12TH MARCH - HARI RAYA NYEPI - BALINESE NEW YEAR 1935
Nyepi is the Balinese New Year’s Day according to the lunar calendar and is honored through a ‘Day of Silence’ of obligatory fasting, inactivity, prayer, and quiet throughout the island lasting for 24 hours. Purification offerings are made in every village on the day before to appease evil spirits, and a lively parade of ‘Ogoh-Ogohs’ (demon effigies) are carried throughout village streets to the sound of loud banging and lit torches to chase off the evil spirits. The noise can carry on throughout the night until morning, when silence reigns in the hope that if the spirits return to Bali, they will find it uninhabited. Restrictions are; no lighting fires, or lights after dark, no working, entertainment or pleasure, little noise from TVs and radios, and few signs of activity. No one is to go onto the streets (except the Pecelang), and the airport will also be closed. More info at www.balitourismboard.org
20TH - 24TH MARCH - THE 6TH ANNUAL BALISPIRIT FESTIVAL

Held over 5 transformational and fun-filled days, this annual celebration brings to Bali a wealth of talented and respected creative masters from around the world, merging the indigenous and rich cultures of Indonesia in the spirit of learning, collaboration and the celebration of creative and spiritual diversity. www.balispiritfestival.com
26TH MARCH - FULL MOON - PURNAMA SASIH KEDASA
The full moon (which has particular importance to the Balinese Hindus) falls on this day and ceremonies are held throughout the Hindu temples all across Bali.
27TH & 28TH MARCH - HARI RAYA GALUNGAN & UMANIS GALUNGAN
Galungan is a Balinese holiday that occurs every 210 days and lasts for 10 days. Kuningan is the last day of the holiday (see below). Galungan means ‘When the Dharma is winning’ – Dharma being good over evil. During this holiday the Balinese Gods visit the earth and leave on Kuningan. During the Galungan period the deified ancestors of the family descend to their former homes to be entertained by those on earth. Although Galungan falls on a Wednesday, most Balinese will begin their Galungan ‘holiday’ the day before – on the 26th. ‘Penjors’ can be seen lining the streets to welcome good fortune to those who pass below to enter family homes. On Wednesday the 27th, the day of Galungan, most Balinese will try to return to their own ancestral home at some stage during the day, even if they work on another part of the island. As well as the family temples, visits, with offerings, are also made to the main village temple, and to the homes of other families who may have helped the family in some way over the past six months. The day after Galungan, the 28th, is a time for relaxation; visiting friends and maybe taking the opportunity to head to the mountains or beaches for a picnic.
29TH MARCH - NATIONAL HOLIDAY - GOOD FRIDAY
This Christian religious holiday precedes Easter Sunday. Please note that all banks and government offices will be closed today.
31ST MARCH - EASTER SUNDAY
Many restaurants, hotels and businesses around the island will be celebrating today most notably for children with chocolate eggs and Easter egg / bunny hunts.

10TH FEBRUARY - TAHUN BARU IMLEK 2564 – LUNAR CHINESE NEW YEAR
This is the Chinese New Year, seeing the end to that of the fierce dragon, and welcoming in that of the charming snake – very revered by the Chinese and believed to be a very 'clearing' lunar New Year for us all this 2013. Many restaurants and bars will be celebrating with performances and special menus around the island, so do check out the various programs and reserve ahead of time to avoid disappointment. Today is a national holiday (and a Sunday) therefore all banks, government offices and some commerce will be closed.
14TH FEBRUARY – VALENTINES DAY
The international day of love… a day to be romantic or to propose if it's on the cards. Choose to share a beautiful meal at one of the many stunning, seductive venues on offer. This is a day to get close to those dearest and nearest. Alternatively, one of the many day spas listed in this edition offer pampered packages for two to get the intimate mood flowing.
25TH FEBRUARY – FULL MOON - PURNAMA SASIH KESANGA
The full moon (which has particular importance to the Balinese Hindus) falls on this day and ceremonies are held throughout the Hindu temples all across Bali. It is the essence of theses offerings that will be enjoyed by the deities. Bali will be very colourful and people will be coming to and from the temples for most of the day so please refrain from honking on the roads.

CALENDAR OF EVENTS - DECEMBER 2012
DECEMBER 13TH – DARK MOON - TILEM KANEM
The Balinese adhering to the Hindu Dharma religion will celebrate 'Tilem' in temple ceremonies, which are mostly held in every major temple and family shrines around the island of Bali. On this day Hindus make offerings to the Gods, placed on the ground at the entrance of each housing compound. The aim is to beg God's grace; so that one's dark thoughts will be illuminated by Him.
DECEMBER 22ND – BALINESE BLESSING CEREMONY - HARI TUMPEK WAYANG
This auspicious day on the Balinese calendar is devoted to the worship of Sanghyang Iswara, Lord of Puppeteers. This holiday is the most important day for owners of leather puppets and puppeteers when they are taken from their box (keropak), and blessed. It is considered unlucky if a child were to be born on this day. Prayers will be held at the temples across the island.
DECEMBER 24TH– CHRISTMAS EVE
This is a fun night to be had, either intimately over a family Christmas dinner at many of the hotels, restaurants, resorts and private villas all ready to serve up traditional turkey or a Balinese 'bebek' (duck). Or kick your heels up with your friends for a wild night of dancing and parties at all the bars and clubs along the southern coast. Bali is a wonderful choice to welcome in Christmas in the tropics.
DECEMBER 25TH – CHRISTMAS DAY
This is a national holiday and is celebrated across the island in all hotels, restaurants, bars and clubs with special festivities programs. All banks and government offices will be closed.
DECEMBER 26TH – BOXING DAY
This traditional day after Christmas is spent relaxing and being with family and friends with good food. Many establishments around the island will also be offering Boxing Day specials.
DECEMBER 27TH – FULL MOON - PURNAMA KANEM
The full moon (which has particular importance to the Balinese Hindus) falls on this day and ceremonies are held throughout the Hindu temples all across Bali. The Balinese that adhere to the Hindu Dharma religion will take offerings of food, fruit and flowers to the temple to be blesses by the priest. The Balinese themselves are then blessed by performing various rituals using holy water, incense smoke, petals and rice grains.
DECEMBER 31ST – NEW YEARS EVE
This is a huge night on Bali with crowds gathering in the popular spots, especially in Kuta along the beach, so please keep some traffic delays in mind. It is probably best to catch a cab. Everyone everywhere will be waiting for the midnight countdown into 2013, so wherever you choose to celebrate, it will be for sure, a night to remember. HAPPY NEW YEAR 2013.

NOVEMBER 13TH – DARK MOON - TILEM KALIMA
The Balinese adhering to the Hindu Dharma religion will celebrate 'Tilem' in temple ceremonies, which are mostly held in every major temple and family shrines around the island of Bali. On this day Hindus make offerings to the Gods, placed on the ground at the entrance of each housing compound. The aim is to beg God's grace; so that one's dark thoughts will be illuminated by Him.
NOVEMBER 15TH – TAHUN BARU HIJRIYAH 1434
Today marks the first month of the Islamic New Year and calendar, also known as 1 Muharram 1433. It is celebrated in Indonesia as a national holiday therefore all banks, government offices and some commerce will be closed.
NOVEMBER 17TH – BALINESE BLESSING CEREMONY - HARI TUMPEK KADANG
Tumpek Kandang Day is dedicated to animals. This Balinese Hindu ceremony is held every 210 days to honour and bless livestock and domesticated animals. The name Tumpek Kandang is derived from two words, 'Tumpek', which means Saturday and 'Kandang' being the Balinese word for cage. This special day honours nature and in particular cows will be washed in the rivers and adorned, pigs will have their bellies washed & wrapped in cloth, as well as being given specially chosen food. The Balinese believe this will bring their livestock and themselves more prosperity. Prayers will be held at the temples across the island.
NOVEMBER 28TH – FULL MOON - PURNAMA KANEM
The full moon (which has particular importance to the Balinese Hindus) falls on this day and ceremonies are held throughout the Hindu temples all across Bali. The Balinese that adhere to the Hindu Dharma religion will take offerings of food, fruit and flowers to the temple to be blesses by the priest. The Balinese themselves are then blessed by performing various rituals using holy water, incense smoke, petals and rice grains.
