CALENDAR OF EVENTS - MAY 2012
MAY 5TH – FULL MOON - PURNAMA JHISTA
The full moon (which has particular importance to the Balinese Hindus) falls on this day and ceremonies are held throughout the Hindu temples all across Bali. The Balinese that adhere to the Hindu Dharma religion will take offerings of food, fruit and flowers to the temple to be blesses by the priest. The Balinese themselves are then blessed by performing various rituals using holy water, incense smoke, petals and rice grains.
MAY 6TH – WESAK DAY – HARI RAYA WAISAK
Wesak Day is celebrated throughout the world to commemorate and honor the birthday of Lord Buddha, the Enlightened One. It is the most auspicious day in the Buddhist calendar, marking the birth, enlightenment and death of Buddha and is celebrated as a national holiday throughout Indonesia. Therefore all banks and government offices will be closed on this day, as may some shops and other forms of commerce.

MAY 26TH – BALINESE BLESSING CEREMONY - HARI TUMPEK WAYANG
This auspicious day on the Balinese calendar is devoted to the worship of Sanghyang Iswara, Lord of Puppeteers. This holiday is the most important day for owners of leather puppets and puppeteers when they are taken from their box (keropak), and blessed. It is considered unlucky if a child were to be born on this day. Prayers will be held at the temples across the island.

Lomba Pidato Bahasa Jepang Tingkat Propinsi Bali ke-9 ini akan dilaksanakan pada:
Hari/Tanggal : Sabtu, 5 Mei 2012
Waktu : 09:00 - selesai
Tempat : Kampus STIBA Saraswati Denpasar
Jalan Kamboja 11A, Denpasar
Tema Pidato
1 Tema pidato bebas (tidak mengandung unsur SARA dan Politik), sebaiknya isi pidato tentang pengalaman pribadi dan ditulis dalam bahasa Jepang dengan memenuhi ketentuan sebagai berikut:
2 Naskah pidato merupakan naskah yang belum pernah digunakan dalam lomba pidato manapun sebelumnya. Peserta yang diketahui dan dipastikan oleh Panitia Pelaksana menggunakan seluruhnya atau sebagian dari naskah atau tulisan yang dibawakan oleh orang lain pada lomba sebelumnya, tidak diperkenankan untuk tampil sebagai peserta lomba ini. Jika pelanggaran tersebut diketahui setelah lomba akan tetap didiskualifikasi meskipun peserta tersebut telah menang. Kemudian jika panitia mengetahui naskah tersebut bukan naskah asli yang ditulis oleh peserta yang bersangkutan, peserta akan dikenai sanksi pengurangan nilai atau didiskualifikasi.
3 Naskah pidato paling lambat sudah diserahkan kepada Panitia pada hari Kamis, 26 April 2012 untuk diseleksi.
4 Naskah pidato ditulis dalam bahasa Jepang dengan menggunakan huruf Jepang (Hiragana, Katakana, dan Kanji)
5 Hasil seleksi akan diumumkan pada hari Sabtu, 28 April 2012, dan hanya kepada mereka yang lulus seleksi diperkenankan untuk tampil membawakan pidatonya pada hari lomba, yaitu Sabtu, 5 Mei 2012.
6 Peserta tidak diperbolehkan menyebut nama lembaga yang diwakili dalam naskah pidato.
7 Peserta tidak diperbolehkan menggunakan alat peraga saat membawakan pidato.
8 Peserta boleh membawa naskah pidato ke podium, namun akan dikenakan pengurangan nilai bila menyampaikan pidato dengan membaca naskah.
9 Durasi pidato 5 sampai 7 menit. Bagi peserta yang berpidato kurang dari 5 menit atau lebih dari 7 menit akan dikenakan pengurangan nilai.
Cara Penilaian
1 Setelah menentukan nilai sesuai dengan ketentuan penilaian tersebut di bawah ini, kemudian masing-masing dewan juri tidak boleh memberi peringkat yang sama kepada lebih dari satu orang peserta.
Ketentuan penilaian dan pemberian nilai:
1. Isi pidato : 40%
(pemilihan tema, susunan kalimat, penyampaian pendapat)
2. Bahasa Jepang : 20%
(ketepatan intonasi dan aksentuasi, tata bahasa dan pemakaian kata)
3. Cara penyampaian pidato : 20%
(sikap berpidato, kefasihan berbicara, volume suara)
4. Wawancara : 10%
(penilaian berdasarkan tingkat pengertian terhadap tema pidato yang dibawakan dan kemampuan menjawab pertanyaan: jelas atau tidak)
5. Keputusan juri mutlak dan tidak dapat diganggu gugat.
6.2 Peringkat seluruh peserta yang telah ditetapkan oleh setiap anggota dewan juri diserahkan kepada notulen.
6.3 Notulen mengumpulkan dan menjumlahkan peringkat masing-masing peserta hasil penilaian dari seluruh dewan juri. Kemudian menetapkan urutan peserta terbaik yang diurut mulai dari peserta yang meraih jumlah total terkecil. Apabila peserta yang menempati salah satu urutan peserta terbaik terdapat lebih dari satu orang, maka ketua dewan juri akan menentukan pemenang berdasarkan hasil pembicaraan dengan seluruh anggota dewan juri.
7. Persyaratan Peserta Lomba
7.1 Warga Negara Indonesia dan tidak berbahasa Jepang sebagai bahasa Ibu.
7.2 Bagi yang mempunyai orang tua, baik salah seorang atau keduanya merupakan keturunan Jepang generasi pertama tidak diperkenankan untuk ikut serta.
7.3 Pada Tanggal 5 Mei 2012 sudah berusia 18 tahun atau lebih.
7.4 Belum pernah tinggal di Jepang selama 6 bulan atau sejak usia 6 tahun.
7.5 Belum pernah ke Jepang sebagai pemenang Lomba Pidato Bahasa Jepang Tingkat Nasional.
7.6 Sehat jasmani dan rohani.
* jika terbukti ada pemalsuan pada data-data, peserta akan didiskualifikasi.
8. Dewan Juri
Dewan juri terdiri dari:
1. Tenaga ahli bahasa Jepang (native speaker)
2. Orang Indonesia yang terkait dengan pendidikan bahasa Jepang.
3. Masyarakat umum yang mengerti pidato bahasa Jepang (kewarganegaraan apa saja).

Juara Pertama akan diikutsertakan dalam acara Lomba Pidato Bahasa Jepang Tingkat Nasional ke-41 yang bertempat di Pusat Kebudayaan Jepang (The Japan Foundation) di Jakarta, sesuai dengan rencana sekitar bulan Juli 2012, tergantung pada situasi keamanan Jakarta. Peserta tersebut akan ditanggung biaya transportasi (tiket pesawat Denpasar-Jakarta pp) dan akomodasi selama satu malam di Jakarta. Selain itu, Juara I, II, III akan diberikan piagam, piala, dan hadiah tambahan dari STIBA Saraswati.

Bali Junior Golf Community together with Bali Handara Kosaido Country Club is joining an initiative with Spain to raise funds for The Seve Ballesteros Foundation in support of cancer research. The event in Bali is part of a initiative in Spain which will see thousands of golfers at golf clubs raise money for Seve's Foundation, which funds research into brain cancer. 21ST APRIL – BALINESE BLESSING CEREMONY - HARI TUMPEK KANDANG
Tumpek Kandang Day is dedicated to animals. This Balinese Hindu ceremony is held every 210 days to honour and bless livestock and domesticated animals. The name Tumpek Kandang is derived from two words, 'Tumpek', which means Saturday and 'Kandang' being the Balinese word for cage. This special day honours nature and in particular cows will be washed in the rivers and adorned, pigs will have their bellies washed & wrapped in cloth, as well as being given specially chosen food. The Balinese believe this will bring their livestock and themselves more prosperity. Prayers will be held at the temples across the island.
20TH APRIL – DARK MOON - TILEM KADASA
The Balinese adhering to the Hindu Dharma religion will celebrate 'Tilem' in temple ceremonies, which are mostly held in every major temple and family shrines around the island of Bali. On this day Hindus make offerings to the Gods, placed on the ground at the entrance of each housing compound. The aim is to beg God's grace; so that one's dark thoughts will be illuminated by Him.
The full moon (which has particular importance to the Balinese Hindus) falls on this day and ceremonies are held throughout the Hindu temples all across Bali. The Balinese that adhere to the Hindu Dharma religion will take offerings of food, fruit and flowers to the temple to be blesses by the priest. The Balinese themselves are then blessed by performing various rituals using holy water, incense smoke, petals and rice grains.
6TH APRIL – NATIONAL HOLIDAY – GOOD FRIDAY
This Christian religious holiday precedes Easter Sunday. Please note that all banks and government offices will be closed today.

Bali Junior Golf Community together with Bali Handara Kosaido Country Club is joining an initiative with Spain to raise funds for The Seve Ballesteros Foundation in support of cancer research. The event in Bali is part of a initiative in Spain which will see thousands of golfers at golf clubs raise money for Seve's Foundation, which funds research into brain cancer. 22ND APRIL - BII MAYBANK BALI MARATHON 2012
Organised by Bank International Indonesia - BII, the BII Maybank Bali Marathon (BMBM) 2012 is the first international full marathon held in Indonesia in over 20 years. The event will be held on Sunday, 22 April. The race will start and finish near to the Bali Safari and Marine Park featuring a combination of flat road and rolling hills.
The event will feature Bali's iconic landmarks and traditional dancing all along the course. The Marathon Relay promises to foster both teamwork and strategic planning among a team of five runners completing the Full Marathon in a relay format.

Pameran Seni Grafis Bali “KINSHIP”
Diawali acara workshop seni grafis dengan fokus cukil kayu (woodcut) Februari lalu, Bentara Budaya Bali kini menyelenggarakan sebuah pameran seni grafis bertemaKinship (Kekerabatan) yang menghadirkan para pekerja seni grafis Bali, baik yang bermukim di pulau ini, maupun di luar. Pameran tersebut diniatkan sebagai upaya untuk menumbuhkan atmosfer kreatif di seputar seni grafis yang kerap dipandang sebagai warga kelas dua di tengah perkembangan seni rupa Indonesia dewasa ini.
Pameran yang dikuratori oleh Hardiman (pengajar seni dan penulis seni rupa) diniatkan pula sebagai upaya mendorong pegrafis-pegrafis Bali untuk turut berpartisipasi dalam Trienal Grafis yang diselenggarakan Bentara Budaya. Sepanjang tiga kali penyelenggaraan Trinale Grafis, hanya satu seniman Bali saja yang tercatat sebagai finalis, hal mana mencerminkan bahwa seni grafis di pulau ini masih jauh dari perhatian publik seni. Sejumlah seniman akan turut dalam eksibisi tersebut, antara lain I Kadek Septa Adi, I Made Aryadwita (Dedok), Arief Budiman (Ayip Matamera), Edo Wulia, Megasari, I Made Artana, I Komang Sukertayasa, Sang Ayu Made WLP, Made Marthana Yusa, I Nyoman Anom Fajaraditya, Geugeut Pangestu S, Ahdiyat Nur Hartarta, I Gd Riski Soma Himawan, I Komang Wardita, I Wayan Wahyu Pratama, I Putu Aditya Diatmika, Andriyanto, Made Karisma Dwi Yosa, Wasudewa, I Putu Suhartawan, Made Dianan Putra, Wibowo, Rochman Kifrizyah, dan I Gede Panca Gautama.
KINSHIP @ Bentara Budaya Bali
Kinship (kekerabatan) adalah istilah sosiologi. Kinship bersifat universal dan dalam kebanyakan masyarakat memainkan peran penting dalam sosiologi individu-individu dan pemeliharaan solidaritas kelompok. Dalam masyarakat sederhana, hubungan kekerabatan dapat begitu luas dan penting sehingga berlaku sebagai sistem sosial. Dalam masyarakat yang lebih kompleks, biasanya kekerabatan merupakan bagian yang cukup kecil dari totalitas hubungan sosial yang membentuk sistem sosial.
Diandaikan sebuah sistem sosial, maka para pegrafis Bali hari-hari ini adalah sebuah masyarakat sederhana yang mempunyai hubungan kekerabatan sangat mendalam dengan sesama pegrafis. Hubungan ini mudah dipahami mengingat jumlah pegrafis di Bali sungguh sangat sedikit. Untuk alasan itulah pengandaian kinship ini sangat tepat dikenakan kepada para pegrafis Bali. Pengandaian lain juga, dalam masyarakat yang lebih kompleks, para pegrafis Bali adalah bagian yang cukup kecil dari totalitas yang membentuk sistem sosial seni rupa.
Untuk dua alasan inilah, tajuk pameran ini diberi nama “Kinship”. Tajuk pameran ini adalah sebuah bingkai besar dan longgar yang bisa menampung kecenderungan tema, teknik, dan gaya apapun dalam karya grafis. Tentu saja, ada alasan yang selayaknya dikemukakan di sini. Pertama, pameran ini diniatkan guna mendata dan mengidentifikasi segala kecenderungan tema, teknik, dan gaya seni grafis di Bali. Kedua, kelangkaan pegrafis di Bali adalah sebuah masyarakat kecil (sederhana) yang perlu secara menerus dihidupkan guna memeroleh posisi di tengah-tengah medan sosial seni rupa Bali.
Sekali lagi, pameran dengan tajuk “Kinship” ini adalah pameran seni grafis yang bisa menampung berbagai kecenderungan tema, teknik, dan gaya seni grafis. Sebuah bingkai yang sungguh-sungguh nyaris tanpa batas.[]

Gaya Art Space proudly presents Alex Valenzuela, on his solo exhibition PUTRI NAGA KOMODO Paintings and Drawings at Gaya Art Space. Alex Valenzuela was born in 1979 in Manhattan, New York. He studied illustration and graphic design at the Academy of Art College San Francisco. After his studies in 2002 he went traveling and working throughout the world and decided, as so many artists have before that his heart and inspiration resided in Bali. This collection is inspired by the people of Komodo National Park in Eastern Indonesia, and their oral traditions, which are represented in the book The Dragon Princess of Komodo & Other Folktales. Alex visited Komodo and immersed himself in the culture to ensure that he really caught the spirit of these peoples in an authentic way. Proceeds from sales of the book, a lavishly illustrated collection of six traditional tales, go to support grass roots community projects in the park. After returning to Bali he discovered not to simply enter the storytelling, cautionary tales, and fables, but also go into the realm of romantic dreams, animal magic, bewitching tribulations and untold wonder.
Naughty Nuri’s Warung & Grill @ Ubud, Bali
We rate Naughty Nuri’s Warung and Grill as one of the best restaurants we have dined at in Bali throughout our four days trip. Their ribs were outstanding – so tender and the meat falls right off the bone easily.
This unpretentious roadside shack is run by Indonesian Nuri Suryatmi and her affable New Yorker husband Brian Aldinger. Other than Bebek Bengil, it is also another eating establishment in Ubud. The patrons profile is a mixture of tourists and local.
The setting is really basic with some mismatched furnitures, paintings and photos of regulars with the owner Brian.Patrons can opt for open air seating next to the outdoor barbecue pit too.
Daily specials are written on the chalkboard. If you are lucky, they might offer babi guling on certain days.
Even Anthony Bourdain has been here. Don’t play play!
Drinks are certainly not cheap here. It is better to go for Bintang beer draft or martinis the next time you are here.
We needed some carbs to go with the ribs so wedges it is. Made upon order, the wedges arrived piping hot.
We also ordered some pork satays for the “variety” reason. Don’t bother and stick to the ribs.
Ribs, glorious ribs. Thanks to the blatant use of kecap manis (an Indonesian sweet soy sauce), the ribs were grilled until the sauce reduces to a sticky, caramelised coating. It felt like eating char siew off the bone, sans the fat some more. It was so addictive.
The after math – a clear evidence of the tender ribs with a nice pull off the bone. The best part? It costs only IDR 70,000 (RM 27) for a huge slab.
