CALENDAR OF EVENTS - JULY 2011
(5th) 6th (7th) July – Hari Raya Galungan
Galungan is a Balinese holiday that occurs every 210 days and lasts for 10 days. Kuningan is the last day of the holiday (see below). Galungan means ‘When the Dharma is winning’ – Dharma being good over evil. During this holiday the Balinese Gods visit the earth and leave on Kuningan. During the Galungan period the deified ancestors of the family descend to their former homes to be entertained by those on earth.
Although Galungan falls on a Wednesday, most Balinese will begin their Galungan ‘holiday’ the day before – on the 5th. ‘Penjors’ can be seen lining the streets to welcome good fortune to those who pass below to enter family homes. On Wednesday the 6th, the day of Galungan, most Balinese will try to return to their own ancestral home at some stage during the day, even if they work on another part of the island. As well as the family temples, visits, with offerings, are also made to the main village temple, and to the homes of other families who may have helped the family in some way over the past six months. The day after Galungan, the 7th, is a time for relaxation; visiting friends and maybe taking the opportunity to head to the mountains or beaches for a picnic.
15th July – Full Moon - Purnama Sasih Kasa
The full moon (which has particular importance to the Balinese Hindus) falls on this day and ceremonies are held throughout the Hindu temples all across Bali. The Balinese that adhere to the Hindu Dharma religion will take offerings of food, fruit and flowers to the temple to be blesses by the priest. It is the essence of theses offerings that will be enjoyed by the deities. The Balinese themselves are then blessed by performing various rituals using holy water, incense smoke, petals and rice grains.
16th July – Hari Raya Kuningan
This day is always celebrated 10 days after Galungan and on a Saturday marking the end of the festivities, sending deified ancestors back to the heavens. There will be many colourful temple ceremonies, with the Balinese suitably attired coming to and fro, according plenty of photo opportunities. Please be patient when on the roads.
30th July – Dark Moon - Tilem Sasih Kasa
The Balinese adhering to the Hindu Dharma religion will celebrate ‘Tilem’ in temple ceremonies, which are mostly held in every major temple and family shrines around the island of Bali. On this day Hindus make offerings to the Gods, placed on the ground at the entrance of each housing compound. The aim is to beg God’s grace; so that one’s dark thoughts will be illuminated by Him.
31st July – Ramadhan – Hari Raya Islam
Ramadhan or fasting month is a very special month to Moslems throughout the world. During the month all Moslems will try to be holy (body & soul) by avoiding wrongdoing to God or to others. Most will spend their leisure time by reading the Al-Qur’an, praying and doing charity work. Fasting starts before sunrise at about 5am and finishes at sunset at about 7pm. Before fasting, at least one hour before sunrise, Muslims wake up to have “makan sahur” eating at 4am. This is in preparation for a long day of fasting. A minute before ‘azan’ or prayers, all activities such as eating and drinking must be discontinued. Normally, most Moslems pray at home but during this special month most of them will pray at the mosque.

This ceremony is held throughout Bali, especially at smiths, garages and works shops. You will see vehicles beautifully adorned, and if you are renting, then a short ceremony will be held to bless your car or bike.

Wesak Day is celebrated throughout the world to commemorate and honor the birthday of Lord Buddha, the Enlightened One. Therefore all banks and government offices will be closed on this day, as may some shops and other forms of commerce.

April 2nd – Hari Tumpek Wayang
This auspicious day on the Balinese calendar is devoted to the worship of Sanghyang Iswara, Lord of Puppeteers. This holiday is the most important day for owners of leather puppets and puppeteers when they are taken from their box (keropak), and blessed. It is considered unlucky if a child were to be born on this day.

This day is devoted to God’s Manifestation as Dewi Saraswati, the beautiful Goddess of Knowledge, Art and Literature. She rules the intellectual and creative realm, and is the patron goddess of libraries and schools. Balinese Hindus believe that knowledge is an essential medium to achieve the goal of life as a human being, and so honour her. She is also celebrated because she succeeded in taming the wandering and lustful mind of her consort, Brahma, who was preoccupied with the goddess of material existence, Shatarupa. On this day no one is allowed to read or write, and offerings are made to the lontar (palm-leaf manuscripts), books, and shrines.
April 27th – Hari Raya Pagerwasi
The name literally means ‘iron fence’, on which day ceremonies and prayers are held for strong mental and spiritual defense in welcoming the Galungan holiday. It is always held four days after Hari Raya Saraswati to empower the learning and wisdom bestowed. Bali will be very colourful and people will be coming to and from the temples for most of the day so please refrain from honking on the roads.

EduCare - Empowering People Through Education
History of EduCare:
Based on census year 2006, Bali has been populated by 3.431.585 people. It means that life is getting more and more competitive in this small island. In fact, the competition is actually happening in all walks of life, even in education. However, there seems to be some places which do not have adequate access on education. Therefore, those who concern about making a better world should really hold hands and do something. In this case, Karuna Bali Foundation works together with Campuhan College to create a service-based program, known as Rural Village EduCare Program.
Karuna Bali foundation is a non-profit, non-sectarian, non-religious Indonesian organization, created to assist in providing education and individual growth opportunities to the people of Bali and elsewhere. Karuna Bali foundation is founded by I Wayan Rustiasa. The operational centre for Karuna Bali is located on the main Campuhan-Sanginggan highway into Ubud opposite the Indus restaurant. Fourteen full time Indonesian employees work in administration, project management, marketing and the teaching faculty. Karuna Bali goes beyond traditional teaching of its students. Based on the conviction that each student carries within himself and herself an innate knowing of their natural skills and creativity, our intention is to offer them the opportunity to direct their energy into these areas and thereby grow into their full potential.
EduCare Program is one of the Karuna Bali education programs that serve the rural village school through education by giving a computer and English training for teachers and students. EduCare Program is founded by Made Perdana Skolastika. It started by giving a computer training to 35 teachers in Tegalalang district started 1st November 2007 and finished on 15 February 2008. All the teachers will be given a certificate of completion for the office application on the 25th of April 2007. The second is in Jatiluwih Village, a village that is located in a very remote place where they don’t have any English teachers. EduCare sent ten of one year sponsored students of Campuhan College to do their community project, to enable them to apply the skills and the knowledge that they have received at Campuhan College and to build their awareness of constant giving and receiving. A special English program was designed by our students to enable the children to learn in very relaxing situation, interactive and fun way where they no longer feel that learning is hard and a burden. In the third season of the EduCare program, which is the writer involved in it, EduCare has changed its teaching method. That is also founded by Made Perdana Skolastika, and the teaching method is used until now. So far EduCare Program has served 265 students in seven schools and the program will continue to another schools.

In fact, the competition is actually happening in all walks of life, even in education. However, there seems to be some places which do not have adequate access on education. Therefore, those who concern about making a better world should really hold hands and do something. In this case, Karuna Bali Foundation works together with Campuhan College to create a service-based program, known as Rural Village EduCare Program.
Karuna Bali foundation is a non-profit, non-sectarian, non-religious Indonesian organization, created to assist in providing education and individual growth opportunities to the people of Bali and elsewhere. Karuna Bali foundation is founded by I Wayan Rustiasa. The operational centre for Karuna Bali is located on the main Campuhan-Sanginggan highway into Ubud opposite the Indus restaurant. Fourteen full time Indonesian employees work in administration, project management, marketing and the teaching faculty. Karuna Bali goes beyond traditional teaching of its students. Based on the conviction that each student carries within himself and herself an innate knowing of their natural skills and creativity, our intention is to offer them the opportunity to direct their energy into these areas and thereby grow into their full potential.
EduCare Program is one of the Karuna Bali education programs that serve the rural village school through education by giving a computer and English training for teachers and students. EduCare Program is founded by Made Perdana Skolastika. It started by giving a computer training to 35 teachers in Tegalalang district started 1st November 2007 and finished on 15 February 2008. All the teachers will be given a certificate of completion for the office application on the 25th of April 2007. The second is in Jatiluwih Village, a village that is located in a very remote place where they don’t have any English teachers. EduCare sent ten of one year sponsored students of Campuhan College to do their community project, to enable them to apply the skills and the knowledge that they have received at Campuhan College and to build their awareness of constant giving and receiving. A special English program was designed by our students to enable the children to learn in very relaxing situation, interactive and fun way where they no longer feel that learning is hard and a burden. In the third season of the EduCare program, which is the writer involved in it, EduCare has changed its teaching method. That is also founded by Made Perdana Skolastika, and the teaching method is used until now. So far EduCare Program has served 265 students in seven schools and the program will continue to another schools.

March 4th – Dark Moon - Tilem Kesanga
The Balinese adhering to the Hindu Dharma religion will celebrate ‘Tilem’ in temple ceremonies, which are mostly held in major temples and family shrines around the island of Bali. On this day Hindus make offerings to the Gods, placed on the ground at the entrance of each housing compound. The aim is to beg God’s grace; so that one’s dark thoughts will be guided by Him.
March 5th – Hari Nyepi – Balinese New Year 1933
Nyepi is the Balinese New Year’s Day according to the lunar calendar and is honored through a ‘Day of Silence’ of obligatory fasting, inactivity, prayer, and quiet throughout the island lasting for 24 hours. Purification offerings are made in every village on the day before to appease evil spirits, and a lively parade of ‘Ogoh-Ogohs’ (demon effigies) are carried throughout village streets to the sound of loud banging and lit torches to chase off the evil spirits. The noise can carry on throughout the night until morning, when silence reigns in the hope that if the spirits return to Bali, they will find it uninhabited. Restrictions are; no lighting fires, or lights after dark, no working, entertainment or pleasure, little noise from TVs and radios, and few signs of activity. The full moon (which has particular importance to the Balinese Hindus) falls on this day and ceremonies are held throughout the Hindu temples all across Bali. The Balinese that adhere to the Hindu Dharma religion will take offerings of food, fruit and flowers to the temple to be blessed by a priest. It is the essence of theses offerings that will be enjoyed by the deities. The Balinese themselves are then blessed by performing various rituals using holy water, incense smoke, petals and rice grains.
March 19th – Bali’s First Yogathon Fundraiser
Welcome to the first Yoga, Music and Dance A-thon, from 8:00 am until 8:00 pm at Desa Seni Canggu. The A-thon is a twelve-hour continuous event, that all can participate in, lending their energy to support a cause. Additionally it is a pre-festival BaliSpirit event. Take a sponsorship form from Desa Seni, then, ask your friends, co-workers, and family to support you. You will become their liaison to the cause. The more sponsors you bring with you to the A-thon through financial donations, the closer BaliSpirit Festival can come to its goal of raising $10,000. You can participate in all the events or in those that are of interest to you. An organic lunch will be served to all participants; relaxing and enjoyment by the pool are a part of creating a full day. It should be a goal to create a safe, peaceful lifestyle in order to calmly deal with any problems that may arise,” according to astrologers. Tumpek Kadang Day is dedicated to animals. This Balinese Hindu ceremony is held every 210 days to honour and bless livestock and domesticated animals. The name Tumpek Kandang is derived from two words, ‘Tumpek’, which means Saturday and ‘Kandang’ being the Balinese word for cage. This special day honours nature and in particular cows will be washed in the rivers and adorned, pigs will have their bellies washed & wrapped in cloth, as well as being given specially chosen food. The Balinese believe this will bring their livestock and themselves more prosperity. Prayers will be held at the temples across the island.
